It is a passive safety device, often known as a last line of defense
mechanism against the hazardous explosions in the process pipeline.
it extinguishes the explosion traveling at super sonic speed or above,
absorbing the heat, quenching the flame in the flame bank, prepared
for specific chemicals properties and their maximum experimental
safe gap. construction of the flame arrester is robust and it is used in
between the pipeline near to the potential source of the explosion. It
works in the both direction ( bi-directional ).
