Macleod gauges operate by taking in a sample volume of gas from
a vacuum chamber, then compressing it by tilting and infilling
with mercury. Raising the mercury level in the Macleod gauge
seals off the gas from the system to which the gauge is connected.
When the level of mercury is raised further, the gas is compressed.
instrument used to measure very low pressures.
